Shabbat Morning Class: A survey of the Nevi’im (The Prophets) - JOSHUA - led by Marty Fellner

09/26/2009 - 9:00am
09/26/2009 - 10:00am
Jeremiah was a bullfrog and Joshua may be a tree that grows in California, but along with Samuel, David, Solomon, Isaiah and a host of other prophets and kings, these names are those of the key characters in the second part of our bible. The Torah, or the five books of Moses is part 1; Prophets – part 2; the “writings” or Ketuvim – part 3. Taken together we have the TaNaKh – the complete Jewish bible.

This year we will take a look at the Nevi’im and review their stories and try to understand their influence and impact on our Jewish civilization and the world at large. Our first session will be 9/26 when we look at the book of Joshua. Can his story still inspire us the way it inspired Mahalia Jackson when she sang:

Up to the walls of Jericho
He marched with spear in hand
Go blow them ram horns, Joshua cried
'Cause the battle is in my hands

God knows that
Joshua fit the battle of Jericho
Jericho Jericho
Joshua fit the battle of Jericho
And the walls come tumbling down
