A Response to Charlottesville

Aug20

Dear Bnai Keshet,

A week out from Charlottesville, many of us are feeling the reverberations of pain and fear in ourselves and those around us.  I wanted to share with all of you the words I wrote last week for the Montclair Local:

"As a rabbi who is deeply concerned about racial justice, anti-semitism, and justice for all oppressed peoples, I was horrified by the events in Charlottesville over the weekend.  On Sunday, I read the first-hand accounts of rabbis, other clergy, and diverse counter-protestors who witnessed the violence, intimidation, and hate and stood up to it.  I read the story of Congregation Beth Israel, located near Emancipation Park, standing up to threats of violence as armed neo-Nazis walked by shouting horrific things and white supremacist websites threatened to burn down their synagogue.  I remembered the quote from Rabbi Nachman, which I translate as "The whole world is a very narrow bridge, and the most important thing is to not become overcome by fear."  Those standing on the side of the right and good chose not to be overcome by fear, despite having every reason to be.

"The white supremacy we must fight in this country is home grown, with deep American roots that extend to this country's founding and the centuries of colonization that preceded it.  Even though it is baked into the bread of our nation, I continue to have hope for change.  I know that those who were forced to labor and suffer to build this nation are at the forefront of building it into a nation of justice and love, and I trust them and put my faith in them.  I know that those of us whose families came here by choice and found opportunity and hope, like my family, will be standing beside them."

It is more important than ever to point out the anti-Semitism which unites white supremacist ideologies while also noticing the continued trauma unleased on the Black community, immigrant communities, and other communities at risk.  To paraphrase the words of Hillel, it is a time to be working both wholly for ourselves and others.

I hope you'll sign on to this statement co-sponsored by the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association, and Jewish Reconstructionist Communities, among many other Jewish organizations, denouncing all forms of hate.

I also hope you will continue to turn toward our strong Jewish community as a source of inspiration and hope, and a launching point for social activism.  If you need a rabbi to talk to about these events or anything else, please don't hesitate to reach out to me or Rabbi Elliott.

in hope and love,

Rabbi Ariann

Rabbi Elliott and Rabbi Ariann, along with BK's Tikkun Olam committee invite you to this event, organized by HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society).

HIAS is the only Jewish organization whose mission is to assist refugees – whoever they are and wherever they are.

Around the world, we help refugees find safety and freedom and regain control of their lives. Our work is guided by our Jewish values and our historical experience of forced migration. ( click to read more on the HIAS website )

Join HIAS and the New York Jewish community for a rally overlooking the Statue of Liberty – our nation’s symbol of hope for those seeking safety and freedom in the United States. We will shed light on the human toll of the refugee ban and galvanize our community to come together as a force for change.

Sister actions will be held around the country -  check latest list

Join me at the HIAS Jews for Refugees Assembly this Wednesday

Sep12

We invite you to join Rabbi Elliott and others from our community for this Bnai Keshet co-sponsored event.

Just days before a historic United Nations summit addressing the global refugee crisis, the #JewsForRefugees Assembly will bring the NYC Jewish community together to call on the United States delegation to take leadership to protect the safety and dignity of millions of refugees worldwide. The gathering will feature refugee speakers, policy experts, and community leaders who will lay out a vision for what we hope to see happen at the United Nations.

The last time that international leaders united to produce a vision for refugees was in 1951, following the Holocaust. 65 years later, join us to be a part of a powerful Jewish voice in support of contemporary refugees.

This Spring Bnai Keshet is welcoming the Al Radi family with an embrace of friendship and support. Fadel, Mariam, and their four children: Ibrahem (13), Radi (12), Mohammad (7), and Thaor (4) fled terrible violence in Syria only to face persecution in Jordan, where they languished for three years in distress. They arrived in New Jersey last summer and we have an opportunity to ease their transition as they build a new life.

The International Rescue Committee has secured housing, schooling, federal benefits, health insurance and medical attention for the family. Bnai Keshet will help the family feel welcome and provide moral, social and material support as necessary as they establish themselves in the U.S.

Most immediately, BK congregants Melina Macall and Kate McCaffrey are launching a GoFundMe campaign to raise $7000 in just 7 days to cover the family's airfare from Jordan to the U.S. “We were appalled to learn that this family, who has lost everything, is burdened with covering its transportation cost to the U.S. We discovered that the U.S. and Australia are the only countries in the world to charge refugees for their own transportation,” said Kate.

“They are the loveliest people who just want a decent life for their family. Relieving them of this huge debt will help keep them on course to do so. If every family donates just $72 and every child in our Bet Midrash raises $7 from 7 different people we can do this. Our small donations will have an enormous impact,” said Melina.

Through the year we will be organizing other programming to introduce the Al Radis to some of the boys of American life. From a softball potluck picnic to apple picking, volunteers are needed to organize and help. Please contact Melina Macall or Kate McCaffrey if you are interested in helping.

On April 16th we will welcome the Al Radi family to Shabbat services. A partner from the Islamic Center of Passaic County, Khalid Bendriss, will assist with translation. The Al Radis will return with Khalid and his family to BK for our community Seder on April 23. Please join us in extending a hand of welcome to the Al Radi family.
