A Hands-On Jewish Experience in Portland, Oregon

Bnai Keshet, SAJ (NYC), and JRC (Evanston, IL) Reconstructionist Teen Trip 2019 with Tivnu: Building Justice

Thursday, March 21-Monday, March 25, 2019

Join your fellow BK teens, grades 9-12, for an impactful and fun Jewish adventure in Portland, Oregon! We will travel with teens from sister Reconstructionist congregation SAJ (Society for the Advancement of Judaism, NYC) and other Reconstructionist communities to join with Tivnu: Building Justice, a gap year and full year educational program dedicated to Jewish social justice engagement and community building in Portland. To learn more about Tivnu, check out:

Over the weekend in Portland, our teens will engage in hands-on work, building small houses for the city's homeless, under the supervision of skilled carpenters; broaden their understanding of some of today's most pressing social issues and make connections between those issues and Judaism; build relationships with their BK community and with other Reconstructionist teens; and explore a new city and its beautiful surroundings.

To maximize the time we can learn and work, we will fly on Thursday evening (after school hours, from Newark) and take a red-eye flight on Monday morning. (Also, this way, your children only need to miss 2 days of school). On Friday, we will have the opportunity to work and will have a celebratory Shabbat dinner, attending Kabbalat Shabbat services at the Reconstructionist congregation in Portland. On Saturday/Shabbat, we will enjoy some sightseeing and outdoor adventure and on Sunday we will have more hands-on work and learning. There will also be ample time for students to enjoy time together and bond in structured and unstructured times.

The cost for the trip is $725 (includes all lodging, food, and transportation in Portland) plus the cost of airfare ($450). The total price is $1175. Families are welcome to use frequent flyers miles to book travel separately as long as students take the same flights as the group, please be in touch with Rabbi Ariann to confirm flights.

Our goal is to send every teen who would like to join us.  To that end, the teen group will be holding fundraisers in the upcoming months.  However, we greatly appreciate any freewill offering to help defray the cost of the trip for others.  If you are able to make such an offering, please indicate below.
