Vav
HEBREW/PRAYERS
Vav students learn the Torah service and begin to run their own "library minyan," building service leadership skills. They are also introduced to Mishnaic Hebrew for the first time.
HOLIDAYS/HISTORY
Students begin to study rabbinic literature in the original and English translation with a year-long study of Pirkei Avot. This text provides a focus for lessons on biblical history and the early rabbinic period. Students reflect back repeatedly on the seismic shift in Jewish history and thought represented by the rabbinic period. They use this insight to reflect critically on current questions of Jewish practice and community.

VALUES
The value of the Vav year is tikkun olam (repairing the world). Students participate in a family tikkun olam project which is frequently referenced in class.
OTHER
Vav students explore the Life Cycle and its connection to parshat hashavua (the Torah portions). Their learning is enhanced by engaging conversation, drama, and artistic expression. The Life Cycle curriculum is augmented by trips to a mikvah and a Jewish cemetery.
Vav and Zayin students participate in Monday night chuggim. Chuggim include Israeli cooking, Jewish film, creative writing, Facebooking the siddur, Jews who rock, and intergenerational trope training. Chuggim are a highlight of our Monday nights and allow students to extend their learning according to personal interests.Mon, March 20 2023
