Narrated by Death, The Book Thief is set in Nazi Germany, a place and time when the narrator notes he was extremely busy.  Death tells about a German foster child Liesel Meminger finding solace in books, even if she has to steal them. She shares this love of literature with her foster father, neighbors, and a Jewish man hidden in the basement.
