Freedom Shabbat

Saturday, January 11, 2014 10 Sh'vat 5774

10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

What is Freedom Shabbat? Freedom Shabbat is a social justice movement that asks Jewish communities to remember modern-day slavery. Freedom Shabbat is an opportunity for Jews all over the world to come together at one time and voice their call for an end to slavery, and their desire for freedom worldwide so inherent to the Jewish heart. We were once ourselves slaves in Egypt and have never stopped longing for the freedom of the Jewish people, long after our escape, and we have an obligation as Jews and as humans to ensure the freedoms of all peoples in this world and decry the senseless enslavement of millions across the globe. The same undying love for freedom that has kept the Jewish people alive during the past millennia must now be spread throughout the world. We are called to repair the world.

Why Now?

Human Trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery and exists here in New Jersey. January 11 was designated to be the annual Human Trafficking Awareness Day in New Jersey, and January as Human Trafficking Prevention Month.

The year, Awareness Day is taking place directly prior to Super Bowl 2014 in the Meadowlands.  As Human Trafficking is associated with large sporting events, and we have a moment when the largest event will be here in NJ, we want to do all we can to raise awareness about this concern.

 Join Us!

Join us for a Freedom Shabbat, January 11th, 2014 and participate in something with the opportunity of affecting millions, freeing others from bondage as we once were, while celebrating the value of life. Every Shabbat is a great opportunity to celebrate freedom, but be sure to mark this one down as a “can’t miss date!”

Patricia Devine-Harms of the Junior Leagues of New Jersey State Public Affairs Committee (SPAC), will be speaking about efforts to combat human trafficking in New Jersey and the entire country.
