JEWISH SPIES AND ACTIVISTS IN THE SOVIET UNION with David Weinstein
Friday, March 13, 2015 • 22 Adar 5775
8:30 PM - 10:00 PMFriday night chavurah features JEWISH SPIES AND ACTIVISTS IN THE SOVIET UNION with David Weinstein. Congregant Weinstein tells the story of his secret mission to the Soviet Union as a 22-year-old in 1987. Traveling through Siberia, Kazakhstan, Kirghizstan and Moscow, David met activists trying to keep Jewish life alive in a totalitarian society. Come hear stories of underground matzah making, secret Hebrew classes, Passover seders in Siberia, and everyday Jews seeking to make a new life in Israel. Of course the adventure would not be complete without fake documents, the KGB, and some James Bond antics. These true Jewish heroes of the dark days behind the Iron Curtain continue to inspire David in his work in Jewish camping, as director of Camp Tel Yehudah, and education, specifically with Jewish teens today from the Former Soviet Union.
