URGENT: HELP VICTIMS OF TYPHOON HAIYAN
The most powerful typhoon to hit land in recorded history has left thousands dead in the Philippines and many more homeless and desperate. Towns and villages are leveled. There is no water to drink or food to eat.
American Jewish World Service is collecting funds to provide urgent aid to local groups in the Philippines who know their communities and are working on the ground to help survivors. With your support, we will make a difference for local people, just as we did in the wake of the earthquake in Haiti three years ago.

“Unchained at Last,” featuring Fraidy Reiss. It may come as a surprise to many that arranged/forced marriages exist in the United States, affecting tens of thousands of women across different faith and ethnic communities.
More than a year ago, Fraidy Reiss, herself once trapped in an arranged marriage, founded Unchained at Last, the only nonprofit in the U.S. dedicated to helping women leave such marriages. Today, more than 70 percent of those served by her organization come from the Orthodox Jewish community. Once trapped in her own abusive, arranged marriage, Fraidy will use her experiences to illustrate the challenges facing other women in ending such marriages. She will brief us on legislative and other avenues to help such women. This provocative and unusual program is one that you won’t want to miss. All are welcome!

An Evening With Sara Paretsky, one of the foremost mystery writers of our time
7pm: Pre-reading Nosh: BK cooks Viennese and Chicago-style food in honor of Paretsky's characters, with a glass of wine and a chance to browse our Book Festival
8pm: Reading by award-winning novelist Sara Paretsky, followed by a Q-and-A and book signing
Paretsky will be reading from her just-published novel CRITICAL MASS, in which her famous detective V. I. Warshawski investigates the dramatic past of her close friend, the Viennese-born doctor Lotty Herschel. This riveting narrative moves between present-day Chicago, where the daughter and grandson of a childhood friend of Lotty's are missing, and the story of a Jewish woman physicist in Nazi-occupied Austria, as Warshawski tries to prevent the awful past from asserting itself again upon her friends.
ADMISSION IS FREE, BUT PLEASE RSVP!
