Sukkot 2015/5776
Rain or Shine

An Exciting Week Full of Activities in the Sukkah

Since the fall rains are critical for the winter crops, it is traditionally considered a sign of God’s blessing if it rains during sukkot. It seems that we will be very blessed this week!

Sukkot is still Sukkot, even if it's raining. However, some planned events may be moved inside or re-thought if the weather is severe enough to warrant changes.  Dinner in the Sukkah will likely be held inside; however, Kabbalat Shabbat will be in the Sukkah if at all possible.

Starting in October
New Tikkun Middot Classes
Kaplan Minyans

This year we are continuing our effort of  engaging in various practices to cultivate wholesome qualities of heart and mind. This process is also known as Tikkun Middot.

This program is meant to help us positively develop qualities of the heart and mind. Through it we will explore practices of mindfulness, study, hevrutah and daily practice with the aim of understanding and strengthening important ethical/soul traits. Bnai Keshet has the honor of being one of a dozen Jewish communities who will be implementing this curriculum sponsored by the Institute for Jewish Spirituality.

Each month we will be inviting you try out simple exercises to help you grow in that month's middah. The goal of such exercises is to bring unconscious thoughts and feelings into awareness, thus making choice possible. If continued over time such practices can also make desired behaviors more habitual. This year we have separate monthly classes on Monday nights for both those new to Tikkun Middot and those that want to continue where they left off last year.

New classes starting in October:

This is an introductory class for those who have not yet participated in an ongoing Tikkun Middot study group.

Continuing Tikkun Middot: First meeting on Monday, October 19th

This is a continuing class for those that participated in a previous Tikkun Middot Vaad.

Kaplan Minyans are alternative Shabbat services held monthly at Bnai Keshet.  KMs reflect the thinking of Mordecai Kaplan, founder of Reconstructionist Judaism, who described Judaism as an evolving religious civilization.  KMs combine a selection of readings and songs with lively discussion of Jewish ethics, culture, current events, and history.

KMs will appeal to those who enjoy the warmth of a communal Shabbat and enriching their understanding of Jewish peoplehood, but who may welcome an alternative, less traditional Shabbat experience.  In the spirit of “reconstruction,” the minyans will combine some service elements with selected innovative readings and extended discussion.

A mix of BK members and outside scholars will lead the KMs. Upcoming topics include a contemporary discussion of idolatry, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as played out on college campuses, and the writings of Mordecai Kaplan.

Lawrence Bush, writer, blogger, visual artist and editor of Jewish Currents magazine, will inaugurate Bnai Keshet’s new Kaplan Minyan  discussion series on Saturday morning, October 17. Bush will speak on the topic, “Testifying Against Idolatry: A Contemporary Interpretation.”
