Kaplan Minyans are alternative Shabbat services held monthly at Bnai Keshet. KMs reflect the thinking of Mordecai Kaplan, founder of Reconstructionist Judaism, who described Judaism as an evolving religious civilization. KMs combine a selection of readings and songs with lively discussion of Jewish ethics, culture, current events, and history.
KMs will appeal to those who enjoy the warmth of a communal Shabbat and enriching their understanding of Jewish peoplehood, but who may welcome an alternative, less traditional Shabbat experience. In the spirit of “reconstruction,” the minyans will combine some service elements with selected innovative readings and extended discussion.
A mix of BK members and outside scholars will lead the KMs. Upcoming topics include a contemporary discussion of idolatry, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as played out on college campuses, and the writings of Mordecai Kaplan.
Lawrence Bush, writer, blogger, visual artist and editor of Jewish Currents magazine, will inaugurate Bnai Keshet’s new Kaplan Minyan discussion series on Saturday morning, October 17 at 10:30am. Bush will speak on the topic, “Testifying Against Idolatry: A Contemporary Interpretation.”
