Over the past several months, we have been meeting with clergy and lay leaders from a wide range of churches, synagogues, and other religious institutions under the umbrella organization, New Jersey Together.  NJ Together has already organized multi-faith coalitions in Hudson and Morris counties, and those coalitions have achieved real tangible change for their communities, including victories in organizing around affordable housing, a living wage and criminal justice.

We are excited to deepen our relationships with other religious leaders in Essex County to advocate for change. Rabbi Ariann will lead us in a community-wide discussion on what issues are closest to our hearts, and where we most need to see change.  Rabbi Elliott, currently on sabbatical, also has helped lead and develop this work and will continue upon his return.

We are in a critical moment for our nation and our local community.  We have all struggled through this tremendously challenging time and we have also seen friends and community members who have suffered worse than ourselves.  Now is the time for us to turn our despair into action.  Now is the time to come together as a religious community and reach across to join with other religious communities to work together to push for change that will make our lives better and the lives of those around us.  At BK we have a history of leading efforts for social change.  Let’s live up to our history and take this opportunity now to join with our neighbors and move forward from this dark time into a new era of change.

Lisa Auslander, Jessica Brater, Maya Grosz, Beth Rubin, Eric Scherzer, and Rabbi Ariann
