Roberta Elliott, a trained journalist, spent her professional life working in the Jewish community. In 2013 she retired from HIAS, the Jewish refugee agency. While at HIAS and in conjunction with B'nai Keshet, she established the first Jewish detention visitation group in the U.S. The daughter of a refugee from Hitler, since retirement she has devoted herself to working with refugees at home and abroad, making two trips to Europe in the last year - one to Vienna, the other to Greece. The blog from her Vienna trip was published in Lilith, the Jewish feminist publication, and recently won first prize in social justice reporting in the Rockower Awards, the competition for excellence in Jewish Journalism. She winters in Tucson, AZ where she mentors a refugee from Congo.
