Friends,
Tisha B’Av is the most tragic day in the Jewish calendar. The historical moments that it marks, whether the destruction of the Second Temple or the expulsion from Spain, remind us of the Jewish history of being forced to migrate and of the pain becoming unwelcome refugees. That is why, on July 31 at 8pm, a group of New Jersey synagogues will lead an immigrant justice service outside of Elizabeth Detention Center at 625 Evans Street Elizabeth, New Jersey. (Parking information below.) I urge you to join me and attend the service.
The Elizabeth Detention Center houses about 300 individuals who are being processed for potential deportation. For most their primary crime is being undocumented. Every one of them has a story that compelled them to take the risks needed to come to the United States.
We will be observing Tisha B’Av at the Elizabeth Detention Center to remember, amplify and mourn the painful truth of our immigrant history. In so doing we are also declaring our solidarity with all immigrants and refugees who feel compelled to leave the safety of their homes to search for a safer life.
We will have a short evening service where we will chant Lamentations, dwell with the sadness of our own history and proclaim our commitment to safety and justice for all immigrants.
At present, Bnai Keshet, Bnai Abraham, Temple Sholom (Scotch Plains), Temple Ner Tamid and Kehilat Shalom are all sponsoring and participating in the event. Please let me know you can come.
I hope to see you there,
Love and Courage,
Rabbi Elliott
PARKING: There is limited visitor parking at the Detention Center. Right across the street. The closest area that I found for on street parking nearby is on Sullivan Rd. on the other side of Dowd Ave. This road leads to a warehouse for Manfreight where I believe there will also be room for parking if needed.content here!
