Why do so many Jewish writers create negative Jewish characters, offering up unappealing, even repulsive, images of ourselves in fiction and film. Philip Roth and others are known for this, at least in some work, to say nothing of movies and TV shows where “shiksappeal” runs rampant and Jewish women are whiny, sexless, materialistic shrews and Jewish men are schlubby, needy, (Jewish) mama’s boys who can barely don a tallis without getting the tzitz caught in their zipper.
We’ll read some of the best (or worst) examples of this and discuss.
